Land Clearing Canberra
Defendable-space prep and selective clearing across Canberra — bushland-interface blocks west of Tuggeranong, rural-residential acreage, retained canopy protected through the cut sequence.
Land clearing in the Canberra catchment is mostly defendable-space work and rural-residential block prep, not raw bulldozer clearing. The bushland-interface streets running out to Tidbinbilla, the Cotter and the southern Tuggeranong fringe sit inside the urban-bushland edge, and the fuel load that accumulates against rear boundaries is the headache. Once a year, before the summer fire season, I'll get a wave of calls from homeowners who want lower canopy lifted, regrowth knocked back to the cleared zone and the retained mature gums left to do their job.
Selective is the word. The brief is almost never "take everything" — it's identify the retained canopy, work out the fuel-load reduction inside the permit footprint, fell the regrowth and the lower fuel ladder, and protect the mature stems that are providing the canopy and the habitat. On Crown-lease blocks under a development application, I'll work to the lines the surveyor or builder has set, not push them. Anything inside the Tree Protection Act 2005 thresholds gets the Conservator process started before a saw runs.
Brush gets chipped on the spot. Most Canberra clearing jobs leave the mulch piled at the gate for spreading back over the cleared zone, which holds the soil and reduces the regrowth pressure. If you want it gone the haulage line gets added, but most owners keep it. The retained canopy gets a quick health check at the end — broken laterals back to a clean union, deadwood off the lower trunks, defendable space actually defendable.
Across Canberra we see this work most often near Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve and out across the surrounding suburbs — box-gum woodland with snow gum and candlebark on the upper slopes. Species we handle regularly include Snow Gum (eucalyptus pauciflora) and Brittle Gum (eucalyptus mannifera), each with its own pruning windows, failure modes, and council protections. Every quote we write factors in the species on site and the access route, not just the visible canopy.
What's included
- Site walk with retained-canopy plan before the saw runs
- Selective fell of regrowth, lower fuel ladder and identified removal stems
- Crown lift on retained mature gums for defendable space
- Permit footprint and Tree Protection Act threshold check at the quote
- Mulched on site and piled at the gate, or carted off
- Retained-canopy health pass after the clear
- Coordination with surveyors and builders on DA blocks
When you might need this
- → Bushfire defendable-space prep before the summer season
- → Rural-residential regrowth has closed in against the rear boundary
- → A DA block needs clearing to surveyed lines for a new build
- → Lower fuel ladder is smothering the mature canopy you want kept
- → A new fence, driveway or paddock line is going in
- → An old shelter belt of conifers is past its life and needs taking down

Land Clearing FAQs
Do I need approval to clear vegetation in Canberra?
Anything inside the Tree Protection Act 2005 thresholds — 12m height, 1.5m trunk circumference at 1m, 12m canopy spread, or anything on the ACT Tree Register — needs approval through the Conservator of Flora and Fauna. Regrowth and smaller stems below those thresholds are usually exempt, but Crown-lease conditions and DA conditions can override the standard rules. I'll flag what's protected during the walkaround.
Can you do bushfire defendable-space work properly?
Yes. The brief is reducing the fuel load against the property and lifting the lower canopy on retained mature gums so radiant heat can't ladder up into the crown. Lower scrub gets cut, ladder fuels go, regrowth is knocked back and the canopy is protected. I won't strip a block bare — bushfire prep is selective work, not wholesale clearing.
What happens to the mulch on a clearing job?
Default is mulched on site through the chipper and piled at the gate. Most Canberra owners spread it back over the cleared zone — it holds the topsoil, smothers regrowth and breaks down across the year. If you'd rather see clean ground, the haulage line gets added and the chips go on the truck. Larger logs can be bucked into firewood rounds and stacked along the back fence.
Will swift parrot habitat or hollows stop a clearing job?
They can. Listed feed trees, active hollows in mature eucs and known habitat stems all pause the cut sequence. Depending on what's there, that might mean redesigning the work to keep specific stems intact, scheduling outside the breeding window, or pulling the job entirely if the habitat value is too high to disturb. I check the canopy carefully on bushland-edge blocks before quoting.
