Two parts to this one. First, the on-site chipping that runs as part of every removal and prune — brush goes straight through the chipper beside the driveway, the heap stays on the verge as mulch, or the haulage line gets added and it leaves on the back of the tipper. Second, the bulk mulch delivery side, which is for Canberra gardeners who want a load dropped on the driveway and aren't dealing with us through a tree-work quote.

Fresh chip straight off the chipper is best for paths, weed suppression and around established trees — it locks moisture in, breaks down slowly, and feeds the soil over a year or two. Aged mulch has been composted for a season, broken down into a darker friable material, and is what you want under roses, vegetable beds and new ornamental plantings. In the Canberra climate with its frost cycles and dry summers, a 75 to 100mm layer of mulch is what holds soil moisture through summer and insulates roots through winter.

Bulk mulch lands by the cubic metre. A standard tipper load is six cubes, which covers around 60 to 80 square metres at a useful depth. For defendable-space owners on bushland-edge blocks I'll also do a clean fire-retardant inorganic option — pine bark and gravel mix — for the high-risk zone close to the house. Spreading service is available if you'd rather not move it yourself.

Across Canberra we see this work most often near Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve and out across the surrounding suburbs — box-gum woodland with snow gum and candlebark on the upper slopes. Species we handle regularly include Snow Gum (eucalyptus pauciflora) and Brittle Gum (eucalyptus mannifera), each with its own pruning windows, failure modes, and council protections. Every quote we write factors in the species on site and the access route, not just the visible canopy.

What's included

  • Industrial chipper on site as part of every removal or prune
  • Brush up to around 200mm chipped beside the driveway
  • Mulch left as a verge pile, spread back through beds, or hauled off
  • Bulk fresh chip delivered by the cubic metre
  • Aged mulch for established beds and new plantings
  • Tipper delivery to Canberra suburbs and surrounding rural-residential
  • Spreading service quoted on request

When you might need this

  • A DIY prune has left a heap of branches that won't fit in green bin
  • Garden beds need mulching before summer locks in the heat
  • A defendable-space buffer needs an inorganic mulch zone close to the house
  • A new landscape is going in and bulk mulch is cheaper than bagged
  • Paths and driveways need weed suppression
  • An established tree needs a mulch ring to hold winter soil moisture

Mulching & Wood Chipping FAQs

Fresh chip or aged mulch — which one for my Canberra garden?

Fresh chip for paths, weed suppression, around established mature trees and on bushfire buffer zones. Aged mulch for vegetable beds, roses, new ornamental plantings and anywhere you want active soil feeding. Fresh chip ties up nitrogen as it decomposes, which slows young plants down — aged mulch has already gone through that phase and is ready to feed.

How much mulch do I need for the bed I'm covering?

Rule of thumb is one cubic metre covers about 10 to 13 square metres at 75 to 100mm depth, which is the depth that actually holds moisture and suppresses weeds. Thinner than that and weeds push through. Tell me the bed dimensions when you ring and I'll work the volume out for you before you order.

Can you chip the heap I made when I did my own pruning?

Yes. The industrial chipper handles material up to around 200mm in diameter. Stack the heap somewhere the chipper can reach with a sensible run-out, cut the bigger stems into chunks first if you can, and I'll quote a half-day visit. Cheaper and faster than running tip loads in the boot of the wagon.

Do you do the fire-retardant inorganic mulch for defendable-space zones?

Yes. Bushland-edge blocks need an inner buffer zone close to the house where organic mulch isn't safe — fresh chip burns. For that inner ring I supply a pine-bark-and-gravel mix or a clean gravel finish that won't carry embers. Organic mulch then runs in the outer beds where the heat exposure is lower.
